In a recent study, a group of scientists have evaluated the burden of osteoarthritis over the past three decades, using data from the worldwide initiative ”Global Burden of Disease study 2019.
The results show that the number of people affected by osteoarthritis has increased by about 113 percent in 30 years, from about 248 million in year 1990 to about 530 million in year 2019.
The authors conclude that better methods of prevention, for instance by addressing overweight and obesity, as well as better treatments in the earlier stages of the disease, are urgently needed in order to combat the growing burden of osteoarthritis in the world.
